Frequently asked questions

What is a Peace Mob?

A Peace Mob is a free, public gathering that opens with 23 minutes of silence. People meet in a park, plaza, or square and share the silence together. Afterward, anyone can bring an offering to share — tea, music, a guided practice, something handmade. Anyone can come. Anyone can start one.

What happens at a gathering?

It opens with 23 minutes of silence. You choose how to spend it — sitting meditation, slow walking, silent tea, gentle movement, silent prayer, or simply being still. Afterward, people share what they brought: offerings like tea and snacks, live acoustic sound, a guided sit or walk, sketching or journaling, cushions and blankets to borrow, or anything else someone felt called to share. Each gathering's page shows what people are bringing. The host convenes; they don't lead a practice or run a program.

Why 23 minutes?

23 minutes hits the sweet spot. Studies on meditation keep landing on the same range — about 20 to 25 minutes. That's long enough for your body to relax past the early fidgety stage, so the real benefits have time to build: sharper focus and a drop in cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. But it's still short enough to do every day without it becoming a chore.

According to UC Irvine researcher Dr. Gloria Mark, 23 minutes is the time it takes the human brain to fully regain deep focus after a single interruption, such as a phone notification or a quick question.

Do I need to know how to meditate?

No. There's nothing to learn and no right way to do it. The only shared agreement is the silence. Bring whatever quiet practice feels natural, or just sit and be present.

Is it free?

Yes. Attendance is always free — no tickets, nothing to buy to take part.

Where are gatherings held?

In public spaces anyone can walk into — parks, plazas, squares, libraries, transit halls. Never private homes or members-only venues. Being open and visible to passersby is part of what makes a Peace Mob a Peace Mob.

Do I need an account?

You can browse and find gatherings without one. You'll be asked to sign up when you RSVP or message someone, so hosts know who's coming.

How do I find a gathering near me?

Use Find a Mob to see gatherings on the map. If there's nothing near you yet, you can get notifications and we'll let you know when one is posted in your area.

Can anyone host?

Anyone can apply to host. Hosts are reviewed and approved before they can post a gathering — it's how we keep the format and the space safe.

Is Peace Mob religious or political?

No. It's open to everyone regardless of background or belief, and it stays clear of politics, partisanship, and recruitment. The silence is something people can share across deep difference without having to agree on anything first.

What should I bring?

Just yourself. If you like, you can bring an offering for after the silence — tea, snacks, music, something small to share. Keep it alcohol-free, and leave anything commercial or promotional at home.

Who do I contact with a problem?
